MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING
Magnetic resonance is a totally painless and safe imaging technique that uses radiofrequency magnetic fields and electromagnetic waves to obtain detailed images of the human body (skeleton and internal organs) without exposing the patient to ionizing radiation (x rays).
THE EQUIPMENT FOR THIS EXAMINATION:
The Istituto Radiologico Gortan has two open magnetic resonance scanners, one for joints and the other for the total body. Open scanners avoid problems of claustrophobia.
WHO PERFORMS THE EXAMINATION:
MRI is performed by the medical radiation technologists of our clinic or by the radiologist; radiologists are in charge of MRI interpretation.
HOW IS THE EXAMINATION PERFORMED:
The patient is comfortably lying down on the examination table and the coils only cover the body area to be examined thereby avoiding any problem with claustrophobia. The duration of the procedure varies according to the body part.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR MRI:
Should any specific preparation be necessary, the patient will be alerted to it when scheduling the appointment. The patient should bring any previous examination.
Prior to an MRI, the patient has to alert the radiologist to the presence of certain devices or conditions such as:
- implanted infusion device
- cochlear implants
- metal fragments in the body
- metal surgical clips
- confirmed or suspected pregnancy.
